This is a fun book! Cody tells his early life story in thrilling episodes which may be just a bit embellished. Few other biographies give this kind of detail on his early life. It is also child appropriate although the vocabulary (belligerent, notwithstanding, endeavoring, profound, conspicuous) would make it difficult for some younger readers.
I thought this a very pleasant read about one of my childhood heros.
Being an autobiography I didn't expect there to be great inward, soul searchings and there weren't any, that I saw anyway.
I found details of his personal life that I hadn't known about and they didn't let the man down.
I recommend this book to anyone else who has an interest in the man and the Wild West!
I bought this book because I had recently been in Cody, Wyoming and found the museum totally fascinating. Reading Cody's life story gave me a further perspective on the man and his life. While I suspect there was an element of stretching the truth at points, as people were wont to do at the time, I did find the man himself to be an extraordinary character. If he did half of what he claims he would still have led an amazing life and to read it in his own words gave me a wish to read more about the era.
The book also expresses the ethics of the day concerning one society's conviction that they had the God given right to eradicate another. Cody, while enmeshed in the process, discusses his feelings about this, I found particular interest in reading his thoughts towards the end of the book.
I had checked out an older edition of this book from the library and when it became due, I got this one on . I was surprised at how different the stories were in two different versions, both written by Buffalo Bill. The later version was much more embellished and drew out the exciting parts, then skipped over much of the slower, boring parts.
Fascinating glimpse of the “wild west” from someone who was there. Even accounting for some probable self-promotion, this was an engrossing book. There were some cringe-making references to the routine killing of Indians and buffaloes that offend our modern sensibilities, but the book offers a true picture of nineteenth century America in all its contradictions.
I was particularly interested in the latter chapters that dealt with Cody’s traveling Wild West Show.
The man certainly led a full life.
He concludes his book by praising the Indians, acknowledging that their land was stolen from them, and lamenting their subsequent ill treatment by the U.S. government - something he helped to perpetuate.
I am an avid reader of History in general, but focus on American History.
Buffalo Bill has always intrigued me and loved him since my childhood after hearing my grandmother tell me that she had seen his Wild West show when it came to Chicago.
Although this is an autobiography, I find it hard to believe this is written in 'his words'. The language is very romantic, the facts are unusually accurate (details of minutia about names of scouts and ranks of officer ranks, etc.) and at times a bit flowery.
However, the book is quite enjoyable. It reads like a "who's who?" of the American Frontier and is well-documented that Bill Cody had first hand relationships with many of these American Heroes. In particular, I found his observations about Bill Hickock especially insightful (his observation of Hickock's personality), his descriptions of the well known gun battles or fights and otherwise just plain entertaining.
Nothing new about history in here, but quite enjoyable first hand account of Bill's Wild West. On a final note, I do not like ( but accept) the attitude toward American Native written in this book. Whether it is his (attitude) or that of his helper in writing the book, I find it condescending, demeaning and otherwise irritable.
William Frederick Cody, Buffalo Bill, an excellent autobiography of an person with exceptional abilities observation and analysis, intelligent and engaging, fast on his feet, and most importantly exceptionally lucky to have survived his adventures without serious injury. I find it hard to understand how much detail is in the autobiography - dates, persons, even third person events- written many years after the fact; so I wonder if Cody kept a diary, and if so, when did he learn to write, considering he went to school for only a short time. It appears to me that the autobiography was probably written by a ghost writer. The times of these accounts happened in the Times of my great grandparents living in just that area.
