I read series with continuing characters and Amazon pointed this author at me. He has multiple series and this is the third one I've started. All are action/mystery novels and all feature main characters who were once in the army. This series was written more recently than some of the others and the author has gotten better with time. I have a nit to pick which I also recently wrote about with respect to a series by an entirely different author and I suspect the problem stems from Amazon giving us British versions which haven't been edited for the American market. Both authors put British idiom in the mouths of characters who aren't British. Here we have a French policemen who swears like a Limey. That puts me off as I stumble whenever the dialog doesn't fit the character, but the story is good and I plan to work my way through all of Magson's series.

Death on the Marais Inspector Lucas Rocco Adrian Magson 9780749008345 Books Reviews
Death on the Marais is my first book to read by Adrian Magson. It started slowly for me, but as I read, I wanted to find out more about Nathalie and what happened to her. Lucas Rocco was certainly one the bad guys had to deal with...and they lost.
A Paris detective is posted to rural France where he encounters a complicated murder. He must solve the crime without the usual aid of modern forensic science aids. from this point of view the book is well written and interesting but is not really very suspenseful nor is there much action. Still, am enjoyable read.
Great murder mystery, well plotted and written with an interesting array of characters.
As series books go, this one was very good and establishes how Inspector Rocco comes to this French backwater, despite a solid reputation on the mean streets of Paris. It is a learning experience for the Inspector and gives readers a clear backstory, including his days fighting the Viet Minh in Indo China (old RVN hands will enjoy it.) I also bought the second Rocco adventure on the strength of this enjoyable read.
A very enjoyable read. Rocco is an attractive protagonist; optimistically cynical, dogged, and intelligent. He can make mistakes, but deals with them. The Indo-China flashbacks remind us of the French contribution in the earlier Vietnam war, something often forgotten. The plot twists and turns, but Rocco is relentless in tracking a particularly unsavoury killer. Power and privilege are no protection.
The rural setting and characters are so accurately drawn. I live deep in the French countryside; even in 2011 they're still here!
Looking forward to the next in the series...
This is my first book from this author. It starts a series set outside of Paris. The setting is interesting. The story is quite good. I liked the main character and his sidekick. The writing is smooth and flowing. After the Marvin Albert Stone Angel series set on the Riviera which I loved, I have been looking for another good series set in France and this may be it.
I have already gotten the second book, and this was good enough that I expect to sample some of Magson's other mysteries.
I discovered the Harry Tate novels by the same author and thoroughly enjoyed them. When I looked up Magson's other novels, I came across Lucas Rocco. Having finished the first in the series, I can only conclude that these books are even better than the Tate series. Magson's knowledge of places and events is formidable and his writing is superb. Enjoy!
